This is an ongoing survey (questionnaire) about panther sightings in Maine.
To report a sighting, please contact me by email at email@example.com.
If you know, or believe, that you have had an encounter with a panther in Maine, please just email me to let me know what you witnessed. If you have seen one elsewhere in New England or eastern Canada, I am also interested in that information.
If you know someone else who has had a sighting, please tell me what you know, or ask the person to contact me by email so I can get a first-hand account.
The survey (questions below) asks for information about the sighting plus a few things about yourself. Unless you ask us not to, we will probably include your name in published results, but your more-personal information such as address, phone number, and email address will be kept confidential. Feel free to skip any question that doesn’t pertain to your experience or which you do not wish to answer.
Please provide your name and where you live (town, state) and, as best you can, try to answer these specific questions. If I publish your reported encounter, I would like to include your name and town, unless you ask me not to, but will certainly omit your email address, phone number, and other such information. Let me know if you don’t want me to include your name (or even initials).
Please describe what you saw in as much detail as you can remember, but I would be especially interested in the following:
Your e-mail address or phone number, in case I want to contact you.
Where did this panther sighting or event take place? (town or township, state — compass coordinates if you know)
Did you witness something yourself or hear about it from someone else?
What was it about the animal that made you decide it was a feline (cat)? What was it about the animal that made you decide that it was a mountain lion (panther)?
At any point were you a little bit unsure whether it was a panther?
What did you see (or hear or find)? Did you investigate, measure tracks, try to follow?
As best you can, tell when it happened. (date, time of day).
Please describe the location so someone could find it again.
What behavior did you witness? (running, sitting, chasing, hiding)
What direction was it traveling? (compass direction, or uphill, toward water, etc.)
Was anyone else with you? To whom did you report it? What did they say?
What else do you want to add?
I will try to reply soon after I see your message. If you believe the animal is still nearby, call 9-1-1 and request an immediate call back from a Maine Game Warden. Then be sure and let me know (firstname.lastname@example.org).
